Learn To Knit


Learn the basics of knitting by making simple washcloths & Easy Peasy fingerless gloves. You’ll be an expert in no time :)

This class will cover the basics of learning to knit. You’ll learn how to cast on, knit and purl, read a pattern and bind off while making cotton washcloths and a simple neck warmer. This is a great way to begin your knitting adventure!

This modular blanket is created by knitting and seaming garter-stitch hexagons. Each hexagon is worked individually from its outer edge inward and shaped with a series of centered double decreases. When all the hexagons are completed, you join them together using a very simple whip stitch. You can make it as big or as small as you like, and choose many different colors or stick to 2 or 3. The pattern is written for worsted weight yarn but you can use DK or chunky as well, depending on how big you want your hexagons to be.

Techniques – garter stitch in the round, small circumference circles, centered double decrease, simple seaming

These traditional mittens are made with 2 contrasting colors of DK weight yarn using geometrical charts from the Selbu region of Norway. They were named after a number of old farms in Selbu, dating back at least to the 16th century.

An evje refers to a diverting part of a river that‘s shallow or still. Using DK weight yarn, they will work up quickly and keep your interest as you work the different patterns in each mitten. Get an early start to your holiday knitting!

Techniques – small circumference tubes using 2 circular needles, color work, chart reading.

The Montpellier Top is a summer top or vest that is knitted seamlessly from the shoulder down. It’s cleverly constructed so that you can adjust the armhole size and the length and there are no seams! You can layer it over a tee shirt or wear it sleeveless. It’s knitted in worsted weight yarn and will knit up quickly!

Techniques – picking up stitches, increase and decreases, knitting in the round.

The Rigmor Tee is knitted in the round from the bottom up with raglan decreases to shape the yoke. Sleeves are also worked in the round, so there are no seams. Stitches are picked up to finish the neck opening and there is a simple lace pattern on both the body and sleeves. It’s worked in DK-weight yarn and could be made in a variety of fibers for a pretty 3-season top.

Techniques – knitting in the round, small circumference tubes, simple lace, chart reading, picking up stitches.

From the pattern: “Glymur is a graceful poncho-style wrap, an effortless layer of warmth. Its simple lines and textures flatter most outfits, while its leafy edging gives it a special touch.” It’s knitted in DK-weight yarn and is mainly stockinette with a panel of lace running along one edge.

The instructions include 3 sizes and an optional chart. It’s a rectangle that is folded and finished with a seam along one edge. This is the perfect answer to cool summer evenings!

This cute little unisex cardigan is made with 3 colors of worsted weight yarn. It’s an easy knit, made in pieces and then the pieces are seamed together. You’ll learn how to change colors, make buttoholes and follow a simple pattern. It’s sized for 12 months but there’s a link on Ravelry that is a pattern for older kids, 1 – 8 years.

We will make these cuties using 2 circular needles and again, they are made seamlessly, attaching body parts as you go! Simple faces are embroidered after they’re completed and stuffed.

This is a class to teach you how to knit traditional, basic top-down socks. The pattern from Churchmouse Yarns is written for 2 gauges, and will fit a medium adult foot. You’ll be making these socks using 2 circular needles in either fingering or DK/sport weight yarn. You’ll learn how to knit in the round using 2 circular needles, knit a traditional heel flap, turn a short-row heel, pick up and shape a gusset and finish off a shaped toe with the Kitchener stitch. Lots of techniques are packed into a little sock!

Techniques include: knitting in the round with 2 circular needles, short rows, picking up stitches, decreasing, Kitchener stitch.

Felting is process that binds wool fibers together to make a thick, sturdy fabric. It’s good for bags, slippers and mats. This is a felted bag that is knitted in non-washable wool and then washed to create a sturdy boiled wool bag. It’s knitted in the round from the base up and its rounded shape is made with increasing and decreasing. The contrast edging and handles along the top are created with an i-cord bind off.

Techniques – knitting in the round, increases, decreases, i-cord, felting.

The designer touch is all about the details. Embellishments take your project to the next level. The three sessions will take you on a journey into developing your creative style by learning techniques such as: duplicate stitching, surface crochet, embroidery, weaving, and Dorset buttons.

This is a techniques class for anyone, not just knitters or crocheters. 

Homework: Bring either a simple knitted scarf, sweater, or fabric that is at least 12” x 12” in size. It can be a readymade item.

Supplies: Tapestry needles, Size E or F crochet hook, scrap yarn, Size 6 seed beads, needle that fits through beads.
